G&B Civil Engineering Limited is a North East based company, established over 30 years ago. G&B specialise in civil engineering, infrastructure and groundworks projects. Managing Director James Riley joined the company in 2017 and has overseen a period of remarkable growth, with revenue and headcount increasing fivefold during his tenure.
Business Challenges
James explains the issues facing G&B as the company grew:
“The company has grown considerably over the past five years, and that has put a lot of pressure on us from a management point of view. This pressure is further increased by working on larger jobs for blue chip and public sector clients. The level of risk and liability is huge, and was becoming a huge drain on time and resource using our old processes. I knew that they weren’t scalable.
As managing director, I wanted to cut down as much as possible on paperwork and paper processes, and to have a clear and real time understanding of our compliance position. I knew that we needed to move to a more efficient way of working, but there is then obviously that fear of the unknown and lack of experience when it comes to digital transformation.
We got in touch with Ctrl Hub based on recommendations from a contact who had been through a similar process.”
The Impact Ctrl Hub Has Made
The Ctrl Hub team sat down with the G&B team to work through areas of concern and to map out G&B’s business processes. We then came up with an agreed implementation plan to get G&B where they wanted and needed to be.
We set up G&B’s platform immediately after the initial meeting, and uploaded all employees, their training records and qualifications. This allows G&B to track and manage competence in one place – and to give visibility of that to clients and regulatory bodies such as the HSE.
We carried out the same exercise in respect of G&B’s fleet, and all equipment which requires ongoing maintenance and/or calibration.
Next step was to digitally set up G&B’s projects. This allows G&B to make all relevant information (such as project drawings, operating procedures and method statements) available to operatives and sub-contractors assigned to the project. G&B can then create, allocate and track specific sub-projects and tasks.
A huge efficiency has been delivered through Ctrl Hub’s electronic time sheet tracking. The process is quick and straightforward for operatives, and completely removes the admin time that was previously spent going through paper forms, and manually inputting data into accounting software.
We are now working on building a quality assurance procedure for G&B within the platform to ensure operatives are aware of, and required to follow, agreed company protocols.
Results
James concludes:
“From day 1, the Ctrl Hub team were great. They guided us through the process and put our minds at ease.
As managing director of the company, I can now see an overview of compliance across the entire organisation – people, fleet, equipment, projects – from one dashboard. My managers have that same view. That is a huge weight off my shoulders, enabling me to clearly focus on the job in hand.
Clients are impressed with our level of organisation and competence, and have complimented us on our use of the platform. We can show clients the progress on jobs, and show them that the human and asset resources we employ on their site are competent and compliant.
We are certified across a number of ISO standards. Ctrl Hub makes managing that process, and satisfying our audits, a breeze.
Ctrl Hub made the whole process simple and straightforward. We are in a great position to continue to scale upwards and effectively manage our risk as we grow. We have improved efficiency and reduced our administrative burden at the same time. Overall a great investment.”
